Ten cab-safety habits that take under ten seconds each

Most safety advice fails because it asks too much. Nobody maintains a twenty-step ritual at 11 pm after a long day. What works are habits so small they cost almost nothing — under ten seconds each — repeated until they are automatic. Here are the ten we teach every Sakhi user.

Before you book

1. Share before you ride, not during. Send your trip to one person the moment you book, while you are still somewhere safe and your hands are free. Every major cab app has a share button; the habit is using it every time, not just when something feels off.

2. Check the driver's trip count, not just the rating. A 4.9 across 40 rides and a 4.7 across 9,000 rides are very different signals. Volume is experience.

3. Pin your pickup a few metres toward light. If the pickup point is a dark stretch, drag the pin to the nearest lit storefront or gate. You choose where the ride begins.

As you board

4. Plate first, then door. Match the number plate before you touch the handle. Say the driver's name as a question — "Ramesh?" — and let him confirm. Never announce your own name first.

5. Sit diagonal. Behind the front passenger seat, not behind the driver. You can see his hands, his face in the mirror, and both doors.

6. Window cracked, doors unlocked until you move. Check the child lock with one pull of the handle as you settle in.

During the ride

7. Follow the blue line. Keep your own map open. You are not navigating — you are noticing. One wrong turn can be a shortcut; two deserve a question asked out loud.

8. Make one real call. Thirty seconds to a parent or friend, said naturally: "In the cab, home by 11:40." It signals that you are expected, tracked, and connected.

9. Keep your exit hand free. Bag on your lap, phone in your pocket, not buried. If you ever need to leave a car, you leave with what is on your body.

10. Trust the flinch. If something feels wrong at a signal or a crowded market stretch, ending the ride early is always allowed. You never owe anyone the rest of the journey.

None of these makes headlines. Together, practised until they are muscle memory, they change your risk profile on every single ride — which is exactly how prevention is supposed to work.
